Start seeing motorcycles and saving lives

As summer winds down, motorcyclists take to Indiana’s scenic roads for one last right before the bike goes to the garage. Midwestern roadways make for beautiful road trips for bikers, whether joyriding along the Ohio River or heading north to Big Oaks.

Motorists can help bikers enjoy the remainder of the summer by practicing safe driving. Motorcyclists make up a disproportionate number of traffic fatalities, meaning car and truck drivers must do better to help keep fellow drivers safe.

Driving tips to keep bikers safe

Motorcycles only make up 3% of all registered vehicles in the United States but account for 14% of all traffic-related deaths. Bikers can do their part to increase their safety by wearing helmets and driving cautiously, but many accidents occur due to the actions of another vehicle. Car and truck drivers can practice the following to increase the safety of bikers:

  • Give motorcycles more road: Though motorcycles may be smaller than cars, drivers can help them stay safe by allowing them more control over the road. Refrain from following too closely and allow yourself ample room to react to their maneuvers.
  • Do not use brights: Bikers do not have the advantage of full windshield coverage with UV protection. When motorcyclists encounter high beams, they can easily become disoriented and lose control. Take care when driving near motorcycles at night.
  • Be careful turning left: Most motorcycle accidents occur in an intersection where another driver violates their right-of-way. Take extra care when turning left through an intersection and make sure the way is clear.
  • Signal all turns: Bikers need more time to recognize and react to a car’s intent, so turn signals may very well mean life or death. Do not overlook this simple and effective safety tip.
  • Check blind spots frequently: Motorcycles can very easily hide in a car’s blind spot. Before changing lanes or turning, double-check for motorcycles specifically.
  • Do not drive under the influence: No one should drive while under the influence of drugs or alcohol. Doing so increases the risk of an accident or injury. Motorcyclists are 29 times more like to die in an accident — drinking and driving can have devastating consequences.

Involved in a motorcycle accident? Consider contacting a lawyer

Motorcyclists involved in a traffic accident may want to contact a local attorney familiar with Indiana motor vehicle law. A lawyer can assess one’s case, file suit if necessary and even draw up settlement paperwork.
